to sign papers giving us clear title to our
share."
72 "Good luck!" the Driver snapped. "You're going to need it!"
73 They came out of the tunnels into the open road, and the Driver
switched on the generator for his electric motors. The extra thrust of
the turbine pushed them along at a good
speed.
74 "Kind of pushing the safety limit, aren't you?" asked Smiling Fox.
75 "No cruisers or beams on THIS stretch!" explained the Driver. "And
my next pick up is way back towards the city. Gotta make a living!"
76 The car slowed down as they entered another tunnel and came to a
pull off. The Driver stopped. "This is the place!" he announced. Bullet
and Smiling Fox got out, paid the Driver, and he whizzed off. There
were parking spaces with several vehicles in them, each protected by transparent shields. Beyond these was a guard post. The
Guard was in a booth. He wore a pistol, and on the wall was a
pump-action scatter gun, and a machine rifle.
77 Bullet noticed, too, that there were firing slots in the walls.
78 "Do you have an appointment?" the Guard inquired.
79 "Yes, we do," explained Smiling Fox.
80 "Let me have that case," the man demanded. He opened a door in the
booth. Smiling Fox slid the case in. Another door opened. "If you've
got pieces, put them in here, and any other weapons. You'll get them
back when you leave here."
81 Smiling Fox only had a revolver, but Bullet had his automatic, a
knife in his boot, another in his belt, and a wire concealed in the
collar of his robe. The guard's eyes widened as he put all of these in
the drawer.
82 "I've got some lock picks, too," announced Bullet, "you want those?"
83 The Guard nodded, and the picks joined the pile.
