at Bullet. "Are your mates possessive," she asked, "or are they willing to share?"
Bullet laughed. "You go right to the heart of things, don't you?"
"Sometimes you HAVE to," answered the Guard. "I'm not that young. I've got five, maybe six seasons left before I stop burning. And I've got three birth certificates in my safety deposit box that need to be used. I know they're worth a fortune, and I could easily sell them, but I'd rather make use of them myself. It doesn't have to be a permanent relationship. I only need to come around when the time is right."
"Why me?" asked Bullet.
"I've been trying," the Chief Guard admitted, "with others, but nothing has happened. The Healers say I might not be able to conceive, but with you I know I will!"
"I'll have to speak with my mates," agreed Bullet. "They'll probably want to meet you. If they say it's all right, I don't see any reason why not. Come along, I really need that food."
Bullet's mates didn't object, and the Chief Guard used all her certificates ...one boy and two girls!
The next morning as Bullet worked in his office, Bright Serpent walked in. He threw three newspapers on Bullet's desk. Bullet picked them up and looked at the headlines. One read 'LORDS SHOW POWER AT NATIONAL PRISON.' Another read 'THREE MIRACLES AT NATIONAL PRISON.' The third read 'WITH BLAZING LIGHT MANHOOD RESTORED.' The rest of the stories were almost identical. Bullet was amazed at the detail. It even mentioned how he'd stayed with the children and served them dinner.
When he was done reading he looked up at Bright Serpent. "There was something I was going to ask you," he commented, "what are the conditions for granting a pardon?"
Bright Serpent took a piece of paper from his pocket and unfolded it. "Signed and sealed," he announced.
