It was decided rather than sell off the diverse companies and split the money they would divide the cash evenly, and form a corporation to manage the properties and share the profits each year, equally. The Warlock from dispersal was delighted!
"Excellent!" he exclaimed, when hearing of the agreement, "Most admirable! It will close the case very quickly. We will not have to go through the prodceedure of selling the properties."
Samuel offered to buy the former councilman's estate. He wanted to make it a shelter for widows and orphans.
His associates would have none of it. They agreed to surrender it and provide an equal share each year to help run the facility so Samuel was soon doing many good things with his new found wealth. And he became more and more adored by the local people.
He was approaching the beginning of his last year when one afternoon Major David came in. "We must talk, my friend," he announced, "please give me a little time."
"Of course!" Samuel answered. "Sit down my friend! Why so grave? I've never seen you look so somber!"
The old warrior looked at him very calmly, said "I'm dying!"
Samuel stared back at him not wanting to believe the words he had just heard. He repeated them hoping his friend would deny them, but the major only nodded in confirmation. Samuel struggled to find something to say.
