"It sure LOOKS like her!" Samuel remarked. "Is there any way you can identify her?"
The man looked embarrassed. "On her left buttocks," he answered, "there's a large birth mark that looks like a butterfly."
Samuel remembered that day when he'd strip searched his three prisoners and seen that butterfly on one of their buttocks. Kalina, who had been listening was very excited.
"Where is she?" Samuel asked.
"She's with some of the little ones," Kalina answered. "She was always their favorite. Now, they won't leave her. They scream and holler every time someone tries to separate them."
She led them through the maze of cots. As they approached Mary stopped combing the ittle girl's hair she was with, and began to stare at the man with Samuel. "Sugar cake?" the man remarked, "Sweet kisses?"
Mary leaped to her feet, then flew through the air, landing in the man's arms. "Poppy!" she cried, as tears welled up in her eyes, "Poppy! Why did you send us away? I loved you so much, why did you send us away?"
Tears rolled down her father's cheeks. "I NEVER sent you away, sugar cake," he answered. "Your mother took you. She was mad at me because I wanted her to go to the hospital because she was sick, and I wanted people to help her. I only found her after she was dead, and by then you were gone. Your mother was very VERY sick. What she did to you showed HOW sick. We must understand that and let that pass. but now I can take you home. Grandma's waiting. You remember gram?"
"A little," the girl answered, "a little."
