Chapter 18

Victor Dinsmore slept late. He had been with the volunteer party fighting the fire at the sheriff's house. He had seen the three men carried off in the ambulances and wondered of it, but wasn't too concerned. As he turned on the television however, to the news channel at the top of the hour, he became more concerned.
"To bring you up to date," the reporter was saying, "this is what has happened as far as we can determine. Last night there were over sixty coordinated attacks against Spiritist communities across the country Not one state has not had an incident. But apparently The Spiritists were waiting for the attackers and they were massacred! We have reports of over 500 dead and we don't know how many wounded. Some of the reports are really bizarre! Some of the attackers in Alabama claimed that as they approached the Spiritist community with the intent of fire bombing their buildings then shooting the people as they came out to escape the fire, they were sat upon by a madman dressed in some kind of armor and wielding a great axe who sang opera as he literally hacked them to pieces!
Another group that had a stolen armored vehicle claims that a fantastically beautiful woman in armor appeared out of nowhere and flipped the vehicle over as if it was a toy! She then proceeded to literally kick the rest of the party into submission! Crazy stuff!
But what became even crazier was that when the survivors started announcing they were CIA agents. Early this morning as the director of the CIA was driving back to work his car was surrounded by US marshals and he was taken into custody. The President, upon hearing what the operatives had planned for their victims, stripped all the agents involved of their governmental immunity and ordered that they be left in the charge of local authorities who will carry out the dispensation of their cases.
The incredible thing is that the director is not denying the charges! He's confirming them! Here is a recording of him when he was arrested, and being jailed."
The scene changed to an outside view. Officers were keeping back a crowd of reporters as a car pulled up. The director was taken out in handcuffs. A reporter screamed "Mr. director, what do you have to say about the charges made against you? Do you deny what the Spiritists are saying?"
"No!" the director answered, "Everything they are saying is absolutely true! I am only sorry the operation failed so dismally. Apparently we have been betrayed by some inside our own organization. We were trying to protect the American people from a threat they will not recognize. WAKE UP, AMERICA! These people are insane! They're mad! In the name of God, their leader claims to be an extra terrestrial, one of the Angels that rebelled against God! He's a fruitcake, a nut case! He's destroyed hundreds of loyal people who were doing their duty to protect their country. They HAVE to be stopped! We're not your enemies, THEY are! Wake up, people, before it's too late!"
"Come along sir," one of the officers snapped and the director was led away.
"Every time I see that," the reporter continued, "I can't believe it! He just stands there and admits he tried to have thousands of men, women and children slaughtered, because they oppose his agency.
At the same time the director was being arrested, the roads at CIA headquarters had been blocked, and the morning shift kept from reporting. Federal marshals arrived at the complex with warrants for the arrest of Assistant Director Day, and several of his associates. The marshals were denied access. Day announced he would not surrender until he had a promise of immunity for everyone who had been involved in the incident. The President called and ordered Day to immediately surrender. Day refused, still demanding amnesty.
The President has given him until noon to comply. If he does not by that time, the President has instructed the military to assist the civil authorities in apprehending him. The CIA headquarters has been surrounded with thousands of troops. Tanks and attack helicopters are everywhere! Basically the US marshals are in charge, but the military is ready to back them up, if they have to take the facility. We have an hour and a half before noon. Right now that's where everything stands, as you can see from the pictures coming from CIA headquarters there is no change. The only movement occurred approximately an hour ago, when a hundred or so agents came out under a white flag. They wanted no part of fighting their own people. Everyone is waiting to see if the President will actually order the attack, but he seems pretty determined to put an end to this."
Dinsmore turned off the sound. There was an opportunity here that he might be able to use, but he would have to present it to the judge very carefully He called the courthouse and asked to speak with him. The judge answered rather quickly. "What is it Mr. Dinsmore?" he asked. "Your honor," Dinsmore began, "I am concerned that this unpleasantness across the country may delay our hearing. I am in hopes that it won't. We need a decision quickly, your honor! Many of my club members are complaining that we cannot set the schedule for our winter activities until we know if we are going to be able to use the trails we worked so hard on. It would be very unfortunate if these circumstances delayed us getting our fair hearing."
There were several moments of silence and then the judge answered "Yes Mr. Dinsmore! You are right! It would be most unfortunate if these circumstances delayed the hearing. I see no reason why they should. It just so happens the case I was supposed to hear tomorrow has unexpectedly been resolved out of court! I see no reason why I can't call all parties together tomorrow afternoon and announce my decision."
"Thank you, your honor!" Dinsmore praised. "I'll see you tomorrow."
