Soon the trail was completely blocked with tents...row after row of them, from one end to the other. In his home Dinsmore screamed "Damn!"
In The White House The President screamed several other things ending with "Get word to whoever is in charge in Vermont. Tell them if anyone strip searches my Aunt May I'll crucify them! There are to be no strip searches whatever! There will be no necessity of them. If there are any the federal courts may jump into this thing and bring it to a RAPID end!" The aid called Vermont's governor, Vermont's governor called Sheriff Daniels who assured him there would be NO strip searches. He saw no necessity for them either. He wasn't exactly sure HOW the situation was going to be handled but it would NOT include strip searches! The aide thanked him. He had barely hung up when the phone rang again. It was Judge Wentworth.
"Sheriff," he snapped, "I'm issuing a court order that the snowmobile trail be opened. Serve it TOMORROW and remove any individuals on the trail. If they will not stay off it, arrest them!"
"I don't have school buses to transport prisoners, handcuffs, shackles, enough manpower!" the sheriff complained.
"Call in the state police!" the judge ordered. "Whatever you have to do, but clear that right of way! These damned bastards AREN'T going to defy me, they AREN'T!" The judge hung up.
"Here we go!" he moaned. He began to put together what he would need...school buses to transport prisoners, handcuffs, shackles. No..he wouldn't need shackles, just extra handcuffs and binders. He would do his duty but his heart wasn't in it, it just wasn't. It had nothing to do with his relationship with Phil. He just believed these people were right. He'd do his duty, but he'd do no MORE than his duty!
