When they finally reached a place that The Ancient One
thought was
secure enough they got out. The prisoners looked at him
nervously. "Will you destroy us now?" one of them asked.
"No," The Ancient One answered. "I intend to do something
far worse
with you than destroy you! I intend to use you for
messengers. Where is your ship?"
"We don't have one," one of the other men answered. "Three
of the other
ships dropped each of us off. They only had enough reserve
capability to carry one extra passenger."
"Then I'll have to call you a ride," The Ancient One
muttered. He
looked skyward for a moment then returned his attention to the
prisoners. "You're going home," he snapped, "and you're going to carry
a message for me to your people. It's going to be very important,
so listen carefully, make sure you get it right! Tell them
this...one way or another I'm coming out to the stars, there's no
question of that, there's no doubt of it. In a little while I'm going
to be out there. And even if this race passes away, even if my
children perish, I will be just as strong and just as nasty as I have
ever been! I may have a different form, I may speak in a
different way, but it will still be me, and I will still be hunting and
destroying evil. It IS what I do. And your people will be on my
get 'em list! I WILL be after you! Sooner or later I will find
you and I will come for you. And when I leave there will be
nothing left, absolutely nothing! I will obliterate you.
There won't be any trace of your petty little empire any more!
People will look at the ruins of your cities and say 'I wonder who
built all of this? I wonder what happened to them? How
could a people that have reached such greatness disappear?'
You had better hope my children survive, you had better
hope we can
solve our problems, and take them to the stars with us, because if we
don't, if your interference causes them to be destroyed you will be
destroyed. I will scatter your children among the stars and make them
marry with other peoples until there is not one pure member of your
foulness left! I would do that because it is what you fear the
most; the loss of your precious purity. Do you understand what
you are to tell your people? Do you understand the danger, the
danger they are in? I am immortal, I am ageless, I go on forever, even
if my children pass away I will continue to exist, I will avenge them!
I have no quarrel with you, I do not desire to harm your
people.
I would much rather be your friend. But if you choose to be my enemy I
will be your worst nightmare. I will be what you fear the most. I
will do to you what terrifies you the most. My children will come
in peace. Greet them in peace, and all will be well."
One of the men spoke up. "Our Wise Ones say they will come
as
conquers. We will be enslaved and everything we love will be
destroyed. We have a right to fight for our way, to defend
ourselves. You can't expect us to allow ourselves to be
conquered."
The Ancient One stared at him. "I will give you this," he finally
answered "If my children come as conquerors, if they come to enslave
and oppress, I will help you defeat them. I will help you humble
them. I will not let you be conquered. If you know anything of me you
know that my word is sacred, that it is unquestioned. When I give
it in any way, good or bad, it will be fulfilled."
"Yes," the man answered, "of all things of you this is
known, that your
word is never questioned. What you say you'll do you WILL do.
Very well, we will carry this message to our people. But how are we to
get there?"
The Ancient One looked skyward. "Here's your
ride!" he
snapped. A diamond shaped vehicle descended from the sky. A
ramp opened and two beings emerged in heavy space suits. Through
the transparent top Crystalline heads could be seen. "You
summoned us, Lord of this world?" one of them asked.
"Our friends here need a ride home," The Ancient One
explained.
"Don't hold them. Their violation of the blockade has been dealt
with. They carry a message to their people. "
"We understand," the being answered, "come!" he
snapped to the
prisoners, "You are fortunate this day that the Giver Of Wisdom has
need of you. It means you get to continue to exist." The
prisoners quickly boarded the vehicle. Its hatch closed and it lifted
skyward. The Ancient One's male companion approached him.
"I know," The Ancient One remarked, "you have to take a
break from the
hunt for a while. It's all right. We can get by."
"It just seems so useless," his male companion
commented. "We
have so much power but we can do so little."
"We cannot do those things," The Ancient One answered,
"that would
destroy the very reason we are here. Using our powers in that way
would be the act of fools. I understand your feelings. It's hard
having so much power and sometimes just letting things go, just letting
them happen. But sometimes that's what we have to do."
"It still stinks!" his male companion remarked.
"Can't argue that!" The Ancient One answered, "Can't
argue that
at all!" His companion swung his ax and rose skyward.
The Ancient One's female companion came over. "Don't
worry," The
Ancient One assured her "He'll be back. The hunt is in his blood.
It is in his nature, just as it is in ours. He was the first to
be able to destroy the creatures of Darkness in the material
world. He will not long let his powers go unused."
"I hope so!" Durga answered . "We need it
desperately!"
