A happy circumstance has avoided a major catastrophe on the Squiggle
home world. (One of the members of The Galactic Community.) A maintenance
worker taking an unauthorized break at the capital's major transportation
hub went out on the roof and observed a device cutting its way into the
ventilation system. he immediately informed security, who activated the
emergency systems, sealing the ventilation systems, and had the good sense
to notify the other transportation hubs that they might have a problem.
Nine more devices were found, in other ventillation systems. When the
devices realized they were discovered, they self-destructed, doing a considerable
amount of damage.
Examination of the residue showed they carried three diseases to which
the Squiggles have little or no immunity. One device DID manage to discharge
before it was neutralized. Over one-thousand people got sick. But as the
Squiggle could put their full efforts into treating the thousand, only
fifty died. The remains of a carrier unit was found attached to a freighter
that had just arrived at the Squiggle Home World that evening. If not for
the worker spotting the device perhaps MILLIONS of lives would have been
lost!
All races of The Galctic Community have begun an all out search for
any more carriers.
So far, two have been found and destroyed. Apparently these devices
were launched some time ago, probably by the recently destroyed raiders
before their base was demolished, and have been programmed to attack at
random, moving into position when opportunities present themslves.
The maintenance worker was dismissed for taking an unauthorized rest
period. However, he was given full retirement benefits and a wealthy family
has given him the use of one of their resort homes for as long as he lives.
He will probably be very comfortable for the rest of his life!
Sometimes circumstance is kind. Or was it that eyes that never rest
saw what was happening and guided one of the living there to stop it before
it did harm? I prefer to believe it was the latter.
NOVEMBER 18
Again we have a report from The Galactic Community that brings profound
sadness. One of its members began picking up hyperwaves, the first indications
that a race was developing faster-than-light travel. They sent a ship to
investigate, to see what kind of people these new travelers were going
to be. When the ship arrived at the solar system when the hyperwaves had
been eminating from, they found it devastated!
Apparently someone had created a solar beam and reduced the major planet
and two of the lesser ones to molten balls of rock.
There was no trace left of anything. If this race had had space ships,
their entire fleet must have been destroyed.
The attackers could not have been from The Galactic Community, as no
member of that group would commit such an act without the consent of the
other members.
Again, it is deeply suspected that this tragedy is the work of the
mysterious Raiders that are apparently a remnant of The Holy Godden Empire.
It also shows they have a good number of ships still left, as it would
take dozens to creat a solar beam of the intensity to do what this one
did so quickly.
How many this lost race numbered, will never be known. It can only
be estimated that they were in the billions.
This can only be called a senseless tragedy. For such an act makes
no sense.
NOVEMBER 28
I am afraid the information included in this issue on The Galactic Community
will be the last we will be putting in VOICES.
I have been expecting this trouble for some time.
The telepaths that work with me through The Galactic Community have
been warning us of the possibility.
The ruling body of The Galactic Community has just had its every two
year meeting, and I am afraid myself and Earth were a subject of hot debate.
Many members of The Galactic Community feel that the information I have
revealed is a direct violation of the non-interference doctrine.
We originally began communicating because the extra-terrestrials considered
that we were already an outside influence and further communication would
not do much harm. But there is a growing belief in The Galactic Community
that even OUR limited contact, unprovabable as it is, is simply too dangerous.
A proposal was put forth that the contact with us be severed, voted
on, and passed.
This will in no way effect the blockade of Earth. It will continue.
We will simply receive no further reports on what is happening with it,
or, on what is happening outside our solar system.
I will certainly miss this information, and probably others will, too.
But the vote was almost unanimous. So I guess we'd better abide by the
greater community's wishes.
