JANUARY 21
Word has reached us today that a group of Ashtarians, perhaps one-hundred
in number, have slipped onto the capital world of one of The Galactic Forces
major societies and attempted to seize its ruling body; apparently in some
mad scheme to force The Galactic Community to return some of their property
seized during the war.
Fortunately the raiders were recognized. Though the Ashtarians managed
to seize the Great Hall Of Council the Council people themselves, were
led away to safety by their security forces.
The Ashtarians are now trapped in the building, but still refuse to
surrender, saying they will destroy this capital the way The Galactic Forces
destroyed theirs.
Apparently their leader has managed to rewrite history, as terrorist
leaders often do. The security forces are hesitant to storm the building
because The Ashtarians DID manage to take thirty or so civilian hostages.
So for the moment they plan to sit back and wait.
The Galactic Forces have told me they will keep me advised of the situation.
JANUARY 27
Word has reached us that The Galactic Forces have solved their difficulty
with The Ashtarians. It has been learned The Ashtarians were upset because
one of the colonies they were forced to surrender has been held by their
people for thousands of years. The Galactic Forces have allowed The Ashtarians
to trade off some other properties in exchange for the colony they want
back.
The terrorists are being withdrawn 25 at a time, each group taking
five hostages until they are turned over to an Ashtarian ship where they
will be taken into custody and the hostages released.
Where no lives were lost and only a moderate amount of property damages
was done, The Galactic Forces see no reason not to be compromising. But
they have made it very clear no such operations should be considered in
the future as harsher actions might well be necessary to answer them.
We have also been advised of another unusual incident. A couple of
months ago a ship was found drifting towards Earth with a dead crew; a
ship that apparently belonged to The Dawn Empire, but whose crewmen apparently
did not exist! Two more identical ships with identical crews have also
been found drifting in two other solar systems.
The ships and crews seem to be exact copies of each other in every
detail. Everyone in The Galactic Community is at a total loss to explain
where these ships are coming from.
A thorough examination of the bodies reveals no apparent cause for
death. The whole thing is very, very odd, to say the least.
FEBRUARY 19
Word has reached us that the present head of the Ashtarian government
has resigned after the murder of twenty-two members of his family.
A native of a world he once governed for his family got into his house
and killed most of the youngest generation because the councilman had sentenced
his father to death for opposing Ashtarian rule fifty years ago.
"Killing you," the man told the Councilman after capture, "would be
nothing. You are an old man. But as my mother and brother and sisters starved
to death in the labor camps, now your family is dead."
"But I was only enforcing the law," the councilman answered, "only
doing my duty."
"The law was wrong," the man answered, "and you knew it was wrong."
The Ashtarians are having a difficult time finding a new leader, as
right now no one really wants the post. I think the reasons why are very
understandable! The sins of the fathers are visited on the next generations.
Sooner or later the payment comes due.
We grieve for the innocents, for the children that did not understand
why this man hated them and was killing them. We grieve for them everywhere,
not just on Ashtaria, but everywhere.
FEBRUARY 21
We have received word that the former leader of the Ashtarian government
went to the detention center where the murderer of his family was being
held and ordered him sent to the nearest spaceport and handed over to The
Galactic Authorities for transport out of Ashtarian territory, and to then
be released to go his way. The authorities complained, but under Ashtarian
law if a family refuses to prosecute the government cannot do so. A few
hours later the former Ashtarian leader was found by his servants hanging
from a tree in his garden. He left a note saying "Maybe the new law WAS
wrong. I had to live with my regrets, now he has to live with his. Perhaps
this is worse than death."
What can we say? The Ashtarians are still having difficulty finding
a leader and may have to make all future decisions by minority vote for
the council and have no official head of state.
FEBRUARY 24
The Ashtarians have transmitted a request through the agents of The
Galactic Community. They ask that I break the deadlock in The High Council
and choose their next leaer. They feel this will help dispel some of what
they call the misunderstandings between us.
I actually had to contemplate THAT one for a few minutes, then I said
"Absolutely not." If you can't pick your own damn leaders, too damned bad!
Why don't you do something like thake them all up in a tower, draw a target
in the ground, blindfold them, and let them throw their ceremonial daggers
over. The one who comes the closest to the center of the target is your
new leader. That would probably be just as practical as me picking one."
The Galactic Agent was in total hysterics after I gave him my answer,
and said he will transmit it immediately!
Several hours later I began having the terrible thought that they might
actually do it! But no one could be that stupid...could they? I mean, we
are dealing with Ashtarians....but they COULDN'T! They WOULDN'T! Would
they?
