The Ancient One and his companions flew far to the east. The Ancient
One landed on a mountainside. His associates could tell he was not happy.
"What's the matter?" his female companion inquired.
"Gotta do something later," The Ancient One answered, "that turns my stomach.
Sometimes to dispense justice you have to work with abominations."
"Oh!" The Ax Man muttered. "We must be going to do something with
the Russians."
The Ancient One looked at him. "I thought you weren't supposed to
have our perception!" he commented.
"For the last four nights," The Ax Man answered, "you've been getting information
from The Chechnyan Spirits and contacting the Russians. It's pretty
obvious you intend to use them for something. They usually won't have
anything to do with you because you call their leader The New Stalin."
The Ancient One grinned. "Getting to know me too well!" he muttered.
"We've got to get done here, first. They should be coming along any
minute."
"Wooo!" The Ancient One's female companion remarked. "That's
some nasty river down there!"
"Yes," The Ancient One answered, "It's running very high. Been a lot
of rainfall in this area lately.
They heard the sound of vehicles and saw five trucks coming towards them.
"Ah!" The Ancient One sighed, "Our victims! Get ready.
When I give you the signal push those boulders."
"Oooh!" The Ax Man commented, "Somebody's gonna get a very cold bath."
They waited until the three trucks and the two smaller vehicles were well
out on the ledge then The Ancient One snapped "Now!" With effortless
ease they sent the boulders crashing down the mountainside. They were
barely on their way when The Ancient One was right behind them. None
of the boulders hit any of the vehicles. They crashed into the road
in front of them, piling up and blocking it. Men in the front vehicle
began to scream obscenities. They screamed even louder when The Ancient
One grabbed their vehicle, flipped it over twice, and sent it hurling down
the mountainside into the raging water below. His companions each took
one of the trucks, and he joined them, grabbing the third, and they followed
the lead vehicle into the river. The last vehicle backed up, spun around
in the road, and hurried off.
"Ax Man?" The Ancient One snapped.
The Ax Man grinned, spun his great ax and hurled it. It didn't hit
the vehicle at first. It bounced off the side of the mountain then hit
the vehicle, ripping through it with horrendous force, carrying it off the
road so it, too, plummeted into the raging water.
"There!" The Ancient One laughed. "That's going to hurt Al Quaida's
financial resources for awhile! Several million dollars of heroin won't
be arriving where it's supposed to go! They're going to be wondering
for some time what happened to it! They may even believe these guys
ripped it off, sold it to somebody, and kept the money! They may get
rid of some of their friends in retaliation! It's nice getting them
to do your work for you!"
"You're sadistic!" The Ax Man muttered, "But I love it, I really love it!"
"Let's go!" The Ancient One barked. "We've got an appointment to keep."
"Somebody's not going to be happy!" The Ancient One's female
companion sighed. "But why did you insist I come with you tonight, other
than to give the children poisoners an ice bath?"
"Because you need to be part of the conclusion of this," The Ancient One
answered.
It didn't take them long to reach their destination. Several Russian
soldiers stood by vehicles near a mountain village. The Ancient One
took on an appearance very near to his human form, went to a nearby rock,
and retrieved a hand drawn map. He checked it over. "Excellent!"
he snapped. "Stay here. Keep an eye out for any treachery.
There's a couple of snipers up there. See that they don't bother."
The Ancient One's companions flew off, and The Ancient One approached the
soldiers. They immediately raised their weapons, but when they saw who
it was quickly lowered them. "Do you have it?" one of the officers asked.
The Ancient One took the map from his pocket and handed it to him.
"Is the payment of the reward arranged?" The Ancient One asked.
"Just as you ordered," the officer answered. "You're instructions
will be carried out precisely. You're sure this is where he is?"
The Ancient One smiled. "Has anything I've ever given you been inaccurate?"
he asked.
"No," the Russian answered, "never. But why? You supported the
rebels. Why are you giving us this?"
"Harm not the children," The Ancient One answered. "Hinder them not.
There are some crimes even when a people's cause is just, that I cannot tolerate,
that I will not tolerate! The rebels will continue to fight, this will
not stop them. But I hope it will send a message."
The Russian officer nodded, raised his hand in the air, and spun it around.
A few moments later two men carrying powerful rifles came out of the darkness.
"Da brishda!" the Russian officer snapped. The Ancient One turned
and walked into the night, the other Russians watching in bewilderment.
The Ancient One rejoined his companions. "Should we give them some
cover?" The Ax Man asked, tapping his ax. The Ancient One shook
his head.
"No," he answered, "the rest is up to them. I won't have a part of
it. I just hope the message we're sending is being received by both
sides."
"If it isn't," The Ax Man answered, "they're stupid!"
The Ancient One smiled. "Come on! I want to check on a couple
of things in France then I want to get home, after we pay our nightly visit
to Iraq."
"Talk about people that don't get the message!" The Ax Man muttered.
"Those demons over there just aren't gettin' the idea, are they?"
"No," The Ancient One agreed, "they're not. But they will! Sooner
or later I guarantee you, one way or another, they'll get the idea!"
"Why don't I have the slightest doubt of that?" The Ax Man muttered.
"Because you know him!" The Ancient One's female companion answered.
"You know him! It's only a matter of time. He's got all kinds
of it, they haven't. Every hour they continue to exist is a miracle."
"Right!" The Ax Man agreed.
They took off and there were several more that evening that wished they
weren't involved in the dirty things they were involved in. They wished
very much they hadn't been involved in them!
