By; Gerald a. Polley

We're continuing to tell the stories about the problems I had with this obnoxious manager. One week I couldn't get in the door without there being some kind of a problem. I was late punching in four out of six days. The boss said "No problem! Just cross out the time you punished in and write in when you actually got here." I did so and turned in my time card. Come pay day I was four hours short. "What's going on?" I asked the manager.
"Company policy," he answered. "I don't care if the boss signed your time card or not. Every time you don't punch in you're docked an hour."
"Hell I am!" I told him. "We'll see what the boss has to say!"
"Don't cross me again!" the manager snapped, "Don't question me!"
When the boss came in I told him I needed all my pay. The boss immediately went in and wrote me another check for the four hours. When the manager came in that afternoon the cook immediately told him.
"You give me back that check!" the manager screamed. "You're NOT getting paid for three hours! If the cooks get docked for forgetting to punch in, so do you!"
"Talk to the boss!" I told him.
"I'm talking to you!" the manager screamed, "and you're going to listen! I'f had enough of your damned attitude! Give me that check!"
The boss who had been outside dealing with a problem, came in. "What are you screaming about?" he asked the manager.
"If the cooks get docked," the manager screamed, "he gets docked!"
"The cooks get docked," the bos answered, "because they come in late, punch in, and then try to get paid for their full time. But Gerald's here and working. But he's too busy to get back to the time clock, fixing the problems YOUR people leave behind! Any time he writes his time in, that's the time he gets paid for! Now, I'm not going to argue with you, it's a waste of time! Shut up and go to work. I decide what's done around here, not you!"
The manager growled, and headed off. "Gerald!" the boss said, "From now on even if you're way early punch in. With you if it goes into overtime I don't care. You're working!"
This was great! It usually added up to a couple of hours overtime a week, which made the manager even madder!
