During my youth an organization that I was associated with often raised money for colored people fighting racism. I've been asked from time to time, how they did this legally, without being involved in criminal activity. Well, there were all kinds of ways. Say you were a fisherman. You go to your wholesaler with the cargo and say "Look, can you give me cash for some of this load and not put it on the books? I need the cash for a special purpose." Many wholesalers were obliging and would give the fisherman the cash, not put all of his catch in the records, sell part of it for cash, and pocket the profit himself. Might not be totally legal, but did very little harm, worked just as well with farmers taking a crop to sell! Contracters could do work for people, charge them one price, but put a lesser price on the bill.
Some women sympathetic to the cause could get considerable cash donations from some of their male friends for services rendered. If people seriously wanted to raise some money there were all kinds of ways. Many of the wholesalers that made extra cash would give a great deal of that to the effort. When the cause is great enough people often find a way. There were some that would give a great portion of their savings if it was needed, because they trusted the people that were raising the money, that they knew it would go to those that needed it, and not into somebody's pocket.
We don't doubt that many of these ways of raising money are still being used today for people that need it. Unfortunately nowadays the same tricks are being used to support organizatoins like Al Quaida, Hamas and Hezbollah. What can be used for good can also be used for evil. It's a fact of life! But those that really want to do good could always find a way.
Of course those who do evil have another way of raising money which we were never involved in; illegal drugs. It is sad that those addicted to these substances do not realize that they are funding half of the evil in the world. Of course once and a while a drug dealer's money would find its way into legitimate causes, but very rarely with his consent!
