39 North nodded. "I believe the same way," he admitted, "but why does
your Father not stop it?"
40 "As I said," Morn told him, "the confessions have their usefulness.
You're a doubter, aren't you, North?"
41 "I don't know," continued North. "I just have questions that I'd
like to have someone answer, but to even ask questions is dangerous!
There's something wrong with a religion that makes children afraid to
ask questions. Was your mother's religion like that?"
42 "No," answered Morning Star. "The little I know of it their
children were encouraged to question. They were
not afraid of their faith being weakened by knowing what others taught.
They have a saying, 'If my faith is so weak I fear the words of others,
then I have no faith at all.
43 "I know they used to believe in Spirits," admitted North, "and that
they hated all gods, but what else did they believe?"
44 "Well, first of all," explained Morn, "I don't know! I know as
little as you do. But from what I heard, and, have read in the records,
they didn't hate gods, they didn't hate anything. That was part of
their belief.
45 But we'd better stop talking about these things, North. By Law, I
should confess what you have said to me, and you should confess what I
have said, which would sentence both of us to death. We are walking on
dangerous ground, in forbidden territory. We must stop now, before

46 "I would never betray you," gasped North, "and I know you would
never betray me, that we can express our feelings to one-another
without fear."
47 "Still," warned Morn, "we had better stop. They
