there."
73 "As soon as the park is secure," ordered North, "break into parties
and start searching the apartment houses."
74 So it went for the next three days. Apartment building by apartment
building, factory by factory they swept the city. The situation finally
apepared to be reasonably in control. People were obeying orders,
staying to their homes, calling for emergency deliveries of food or
medical care as needed.
75 The outlying districts were doing even better, while troops still
patrolled the apartment houses, people were being allowed to go back to
work. Morn decided that things were quiet enough that he could go out
into the field and still coordinate operations.
76 They had enough troops now, to cover all the hot spots. He was no
sooner on the wing, when he got a call from one of his Aids. "Sir,
we've got something awful in one of the apartment buildings in E
sector. Can you come and have a look? Commander Northern Star is busy."
77 "On my way," Morn replied. He landed on the big apartment complex,
and a Soldier guided him to one of the inner apartments.
78 "A woman called," the Soldier explained, "and told Headquarters some
men in the building were killing her neighbors. When we
arrived....well, you'll have to see for yourself, sir. I can't explain
it." The man was nearly in tears.
79 As they neared the apartment another young Soldier emerged and
proceeded to get sick by the door. "Sorry, sir," he apologized,
"couldn't make it to the bathroom."
80 Morn touched the man's shoulder. "Go see the Medic," he insisted,
"he'll give you something to help your stomach."
