38 "What if he doesn't like The law," North
asked, "and changes it?"
39 "The First Speaker cannot change Lhe law," Bright Serpent continued.
"He can add to it within limits or clarify it for a new circumstance,
but he cannot change it. The Law is the same as it has always been
since The Old Fox's time. It is quite different from the Havens' system
where The law can change drastically, at the whim of each new Lord God."
40 "And your Law says I did something wrong?" North muttered. "I killed
a piece of filth that deserved killing who was torturing people and

first, explained the situation, then I am sure the Council would have
given you permission to act."
42 North shook his head. "They would have given me permission to act,"
he moaned, "but they punish me because I acted before they gave me
permission. Now don't you think that's a little stupid?"
43 "It depends," snapped Bright Serpent, "if you believe in following
The Law or merely making your own as you go along."
44 "I have a feeling," laughed North, "you don't like me very much."
45 "In reality, sir I like you very much. It's your attitude towards my
Lord and your good friend, I don't like. I wish you to make peace, to
return to that state that you had before this thing started."
46 "All right," agreed North, "I'll speak with Morn. Now, let's finish
this card game, then you can leave and tell your Lord the good news."
47 "Yes, sir!" Bright Serpent agreed with a smile.
48 A few hours later Morn was overjoyed when he made his report. "You
did well," Morn praised, "VERY well!
