76 The maid looked at her. "You know," she said,
"you're more beautiful than some of the women in those disgusting men's
books. Remember that photographer that wanted to take pictures of you?"
77 "Do I ever!" laughed Mountain Glory , "He didn't tell me he wanted
me to take my clothes off until we got to his studio! I never ran so
fast in my life!
I want men to notice me, but not quite THAT much! "
78 "Perhaps," the Maid continued, "if you packaged the merchandise a
little bit more appealingly they might take notice. All you ever wear
is field dress. Get out of that uniform once and a while. Wear
something frilly and pretty. Let them KNOW you're a woman."
79 Mountain Glory sat down her cup with a 'THUD.' "I'm going into the
city!" she snapped. "If anybody's looking for me, I'm taking the damned
day off! I haven't had one in who knows how long! And I've just decided
to TAKE it!"
80 She grabbed the keys to Gray Boar's Silver Comet. He never drove it
anyway, and drove off through the gate. Northern was far different from
the city it used to be. Now, most of it inside the old walls were
government buildings. The apartment houses and shopping districts now
surrounded the city.
81 Mountain Glory checked her purse. She didn't have much money, but
she had her checkbook. As she went from shop to shop staring in the
windows, she didn't know what she wanted, but she kept looking. As she
stopped in one window, a man about her own age stepped up to her.
82 "Hello, darling," he laughed, "you on leave, too? Why don't you let
me buy you one of those pretty little things, and we'll see how you
look in it?"
