40 The Wonderful Ones stormed the gates, and soon
were fighting their way into the city. 'All is lost! ' cried The King,
"All is lost! We are helpless!'
41 Then a cry rose from the wall. 'Groam comes! ' a defender shouted,
'And his people come with him! They fill the field!'
42 Now, The Wonderful Ones turned to meet this new attack, but Groam's
people were used to fighting the great beasts that lived in the ground.
They grabbed the bridles of the riding beasts, pulled them down, and
killed their riders. Soon, they fought their way into the city.
43 In the square Groam fought his way to The King. The Wonderful Ones
knew they weren't beaten but the battle wasn't going their way, either.
'Rally!' cried Speaktruth, 'Rally! Don't let these ugly moles defeat
you!'
44 Suddenly Groam's weapon was knocked from his hand. He was on the
pedestal of The Spear, and without thinking seized it and yanked. It
came free with a beautiful singing sound, like a great choir had
started to sing. And as he raised it high it began to shine with a
great Light!
45 And then something wonderful happened! Where Groam had stood was the
most beautiful man anyone had ever seen! And all of Groam's people
became beautiful!
46 The Plentifuls, though they did not change, were brightened, but The
Wonderful Ones turned to hideous, ugly beasts, with long claws and
terrible fangs! When they looked at each other they did not know each
other, and attacked one-another, thinking each other monsters! In a few
moments they all lay dead. The whole army had killed each other!
47 'What happened?' called The King. The blind
