Chapter Six
As they walked over the countryside, seeking the enemy's strong points,
from time to time they were separate from their companions. And one
of these times Thundering Dove asked Bay Blossom, "What happened to the
man who was living with you before?"
2 "When this damned war began," explained Bay Blossom, "we were in the
middle of a fight when I got in trouble. He threw himself away ....took
the weapon that was meant for me. A while later he died in my arms."
3 "He did his people a great service," praised Thundering Dove. "If you
had died, we would have probably lost every city in these lands. There
is little doubt in anyone's mind that it was YOUR skill that saved
them!"
4 "That does not make the dying of a very good friend much better," Bay
Blossom continued.
5 "You call him a friend," questioned Thundering Dove. "He was not a
lover?"
6 "We fulfilled each-other's needs," answered Bay Blossom. "Until now,
I have never had a lover."
7 They continued on, silent for a long time. Then Bay Blossom spoke
again. "I don't understand The Lords Ways. Why do They do this to us?
Why couldn't we have met along some pleasant brook, or at some dance?
By the way, I love to dance! Or, in some other nice way? Why does our
love have to be soiled by all this damned blood and pain? I get so sick
of it sometimes.
8 I lose some of these young boys and their mothers look at me like
it's my fault. They don't know that inside I cry, just as much as they
do, that everyone of them is precious to me. Why can't people just live
in peace with one-another?"
