22 "I withdraw," the woman agreed, "for now. I do not like the idea of
giving up my sweet boys any more than you like giving up your women.
But to be free, to be able to shake off these man's garbs and wear a
woman's dress, to walk the street and be called 'lady,' for that I will
surrender them. I vote 'YES!'"
23 Great Mountain motioned Swift Deer to sit, and he joined in the
discussion. Other bandits rose objections, but one by one Great
Mountain beat them down. Swift Deer began to realize this burly Giant
was one of the greatest orators he had ever heard. Not only did he use
his great strength, but he used his brain. Finally, all were won over
but two Chieftains, who again and again brought up objections.
24 Finally, Great Mountain raised his arms. "We are all too tired," he
announced, "all too weary. Let us
say enough for today. Let us meet again in the morning when we have all
had time to consider, and put it to a vote. The majority will rule, and the rest will follow their decision."
25 The Chieftains agreed. As they parted, the female Chieftain walked
by Swift Deer. "Be careful, honey," she told Sweet Treasure, "I may come
after him!”
26 "Don't you dare!" snapped Sweet Treasure, coming between the woman
and Swift Deer. The woman roared with laughter and patted her
on the head. "It's alright, child," she assured, "I won't take your
man. He deserves better than me, anyway." She smiled at Swift Deer and
headed off, a young, handsome boy under each arm.
27 Swift Deer shook his head, went back to his quarters, and was, in
moments, asleep. But he was awakened by a troubling dream. Ugly beasts
