areas where the more advanced people live draw
the more advanced Spirits."
52 "Lord," questioned the young man, "I do not doubt your wisdom, but
what you say swims in my head like a great storm! I think I understand
your meaning. The good people draw the good Spirits, the evil people
draw the evil Spirits. Is that not so?"
53 "You are almost right," continued The Hawk, "but I would say it this
way. The LEARNED people draw the learned Spirits, and the unlearned
draw the unlearned. You see, there is actually no such thing as good
and evil. There is only the learned and the unlearned.
54 People do evil only because they have not learned the consequences
of doing so. When a person learns the price of doing evil they stop
doing it. It is only the ignorant that do evil, the wise do not."
55 "So, if we eliminate ignorance," said the young man, "if we teach
people what evil will cost them, they'll stop doing it."
56 "Now," praised The Hawk, "you are truly growing in wisdom. Evil is
the worst form of ignorance."
57 "Strange," admitted the young man, "I never thought of it that way,
but now that you say it I see the truth in it! Evil is ignorance,
ignorance is evil; I like that!"
58 "But Lord," continued a young man, "I know many people who are
ignorant, that cannot read or write or do the simplest numbers, but
they are, Lord, by no means, evil."
59 The other young man answered him saying, "He is not talking about
THAT kind of wisdom. Men can possess knowledge yet have no wisdom at
all. He is speaking of the wisdom of the heart, of the soul, the wisdom
that teaches a man to be good to his woman, to honor his children, to
sacrifice for his people, even though it may mean loss for himself.’
