but the other plane never came. Hours later a
boat brought in its Pilot. That he had even managed to turn and start
for home was a miracle! There were seven bullets in his body!
29 "What in The Name of The Lords are they shooting with?" wondered
Bright Sword.
30 "I don't know," answered Sorrowful Dove, "but with your permission
I'll take a boat over there with a group of volunteers and see if we
can find out."
31 Bright Sword agreed. It wasn't until after they had left that Gray
Serpent came up and remarked,"Kind of a dangerous mission to send a man
on who can't swim, isn't it?"
32 "WHO can't swim?" inquired Bright Sword.
33 "Sorrowful Dove," Gray Serpent told him.
34 Bright Sword shook his head. "Some men," he sighed, "just don't have
any sense!"
35 For anxious days they waited. Then, finally, the small ship sailed
back into the harbor. It wasn't in very good shape! It had obviously
been hit by more than one cannonball. But somehow it had survived.
36 When Sorrowful Dove came ashore, his men began unloading a
strange-looking devise from the boat. It had a three-legged stand, and
looked like eight rifle barrels fastened together in a circle. "This is
what hit our gliders," he explained. "They've got hundreds of them.
This one's short-barreled, but they've got some with much longer
barrels. Roll that barrel over there, into the water."
37 He put a strange-looking container on the top of the device, pointed
it at the barrel, and began to turn a crank on the weapon's side. As
each barrel rolled around to the top, it fired. Bullet after bullet
smashed into the barrel, making it splinters.
38 Bold Fox walked over. "Let me try," he insisted. In no
time at all he got the hang of how the weapon worked.
