Chapter Seven
Even before he was up, Smiling Fox was on the
phone. "I KNOW he's busy!" he was telling someone, "and I know it's a
holiday today, but we want to come tomorrow, not today. We just want a
few minutes to talk with him. We're on a mission from The Young Speaker.
2 No, you can't call me back. We don't want anybody to know where we
are. We'll come to you. If you want to check on us, you can call our
World Headquarters at Northern. Tell them code 6A, 21 and they'll
identify us and give you our description. All right, I'll call back
later."
3 Smiling Fox hung up the phone. "Damn!" he snapped, "that woman seems
determined to keep us away from that man. It's the same damned thing every time we try to get ahold of him.
And his house is a fortress ...literally! It was originally a local
command post on the edge of the city. You couldn't get in with a tank."
4 As Bullet was finishing dressing, he asked what holiday it was.
"Visitation Day. Don't you know any of your holidays? What kind of
school did you go to?"
5 "One that had a golden circle over the door," snapped Bullet, "with a
cross in it."
6 "Oh," apologized Smiling Fox, "sorry, I didn't know you weren't
raised in The Faith. There's five major holidays in the season. There's
The Festival of The Journey, Visitation Day, Blessed Fathers Day,
Blessed Mothers Day, and The Celebration of The New Season."
7 "So what's this one?" inquired Bullet. "What's it mean?"
8 "It's Visitation Day," explained Smiling Fox, We believe that once a
year our Ancestors visit each of Their Descendants to see how they are doing, to determine rather or not
they are keeping The Law, and should continue to receive Their
Blessings."
