125 That's disgusting!" gasped the Maid. "Don't
your people realize that things like that happen when you keep boys and
girls seperate?"
126 "Among The Oneness," explained Bullet, "boys and girls aren't even
supposed to touch each other until they're married. Even during
courtship they're never allowed to go anywhere, alone."
127 "It doesn't sound like much fun," the Maid told him, "I wouldn't
like that way of life."
128 "I wouldn't like other things," put in the Cook, the oldest of the
three women. She was quite a bit heavier than the other two, but still
stunningly beautiful. "Imagine," she continued, "the women are taught
to read and write, and do figures, but that's all. And the only thing
they can be besides Homemakers, is Nurses, Cooks, or Laundry
Workers....all so-called woman's work. Don't your people realize that
they're
wasting half their race's intelligence?"
129 Bullet shook his head. "According to The Teachings of The Oneness,"
he continued, "a woman's place is to serve her man, nothing else. To
keep house and have babies ...that is their only function. According to
the legends, the first woman was responsible for the first man's sin
against The One True God, through her disobedience of his command.
130 So, for all time, all her descendants are punished by being made
the servants of their men. They can never have authority over a man, in
any way. They can't even dream of the freedoms YOU have. If you are
treated unfairly, your Law protects your rights, but the women of The
Oneness have no such protection. They can only beg help from their father or another male relative. If
he refuses to intercede, there is nothing else she can do."
131 "Don't any of these women ever leave the faith of The Oneness?"
asked the Maid.
