The Spirits Speak

This is an interview with the Spirit of Vlad The Impaler, Prince of Wallachia. The stories of Dracula have been based o his life. Questions are asked by Speaker Linda J. Polley and the answers are channeled through Speaker Gerald A. Polley.

1. Do you remember anything about the time you were kidnapped and held hostage by the Turks for 6 years when you were 11 or 12?

A. Oh, yes! I was very surprised to find that mostly the Turks were agreeable people. Like all human beings some of them had faults but the majority were sociable.

2. Why did they blind the two sons of Brankovic held hostage?

A. Because they were caught looking at things they were not supposed to be looking at, so the Sultan decided they wouldn't be looking at anything any more.

3. Is it true your younger brother succombed to young Mehmed 2nd's sexual advances, as a prisoner, and were you ever accosted thusly?

A. Unfortunately, my brother had a fondness for such affectioins. I did not. Only once did a Turk have me take part in his pleasure. I returned the favor to him a few nights later with a hot iron. Some of the Turks wanted my head, but the Sultan said "No, the boy has spirit. Se that from now on he's left alone!" I was never bothered that way again!

4. What did you feel about your father breaking the treaty with the Turks and sending your older brother in with troops for the Christian cause?

A. He did what was required of him to do. I know my duty was to die if necessary. That was our way.

5. Were you a vampire?

A. Of coures not! I had trouble even eating red meat, and sustained myself mainly on fish and poultry. I might have been swift to punish my enemies but I was NOT a blood drinker.

6. Were you knowledgable in the use of magic and Wicca?

A, Oh, no! I had some astrologers and soothsayers....everybody did. But I knew nothing of these things myself. My main interest was battle tactics and the principles of political rule.

7. Did you have an uncontrollable twitch in your lower lip that threw your whole face out of line as mentioned by an historian?

A. When I became angry I had a tiny tremble in my lower lip. It is a great exggeration to say that it distorted my entire face!

8. Did you enjoy finally getting revenge killing Vladislav II in battle near Tirgoviste for your older brother's death as he was buried alive?

A. I think I would have preferred to destroy his army and make him flee. Humiliating him would have been more satisfying. But killing him did have some satisfaction, too.

9. Is the story true how you punished the land owners who planned your older brother's death; built your second castle beginning Easter 1457 after you had made them your slaves- even their children?

A. Yes, there is SOME truth in this story though again my mistreatment of them was greatly exaggerated. It was far more profitable to let their friends and relations buy back the children than to put them to labor. Even the younger women were disposed of at a profitable gain. Those I kept were more than enough to send the message I wanted to send.

10. Why did you like staying in monastaries?

A. They were quiet. The monks often had a great deal of knowledge that they enjoyed sharing, and an excellent information network that was always put to my service for the right rewards.

11. If you were Catholic, what is your opnion of this religion now they have ruined your name with evil legends?

A. I was never really Catholic. In truth I would have called myself an agnostic. I only professed religion for the sake of the power it gave me. I could care less what the corrupt and feeble minded have said of me. Greater courts have held me in judgment and found me with little debt to answer for.

12. Do you feel you were of Robin Hood persona?

A. I do not think so. I do not htink your Robin Hood would have been as harsh to his enemies as I was to mine, and I expected my due from everyone, rich or poor. I think I liked the poor a little bit better than the rich and treated them better than most. But a Robin Hood....no. I do not think it fits.
