out," he cried, "a few seasons more. Our first
batch of clones is almost ready. Two or three seasons and they will be
old enough to fight, our numbers will be unstoppable."
14 The first Scientist spoke up. "If they have an atom bomb," he
argued, "numbers will be meaningless. It will just be more for them to
kill. We must see this demonstration. We must know, for sure, what the
weapon is they have. What good are millions of soldiers if they can all
be destroyed by one bomb?"
15 The Priest of Priests was angry. He hated to make any kind of
bargain with the people he despised. But even he could not face the
thought of his peoples' total annihilation. "They will give us some
kind of terms," he roared, "if they do have such a weapon. Send the
message. We agree to a cease fire. I will view this demonstration, see
how this bomb works!"
16 So it was, a month later The Priest of Priests toured the abandoned
city and saw the preparations The Children of Spirit had made for the
test. In the city, itself, were pens full of sheep out in the open.
There were sheep in the buildings. Coming out from the city was a line
of captured tanks and vehicles, each one a quarter of a mile from the
one before it. One vehicle was sheltered, another in the open at each
test site.
17 In addition to the buildings that were already there, The Children
of Spirit had erected other buildings of various types.
18 "I am impressed!" admitted The Priest of Priests. "You intend to
learn everything from this test you can. But is it really necessary to
put sheep inside the tanks?"
19 "It is the only way we can tell," explained Thundering Boar, "if the
sheep die in them, men would, too. We hope never to drop one of these
weapons again.
